Abhyanga Treatment – Ayurvedic Full Body Oil Massage for Healing and Rejuvenation

Abhyanga is a traditional Ayurvedic full-body massage therapy that involves the application of warm, medicated herbal oils tailored to your body type (Dosha). It is one of the most essential and nurturing therapies in Ayurveda, offering both preventive and curative health benefits.

Rooted in centuries of Ayurvedic wisdom, Abhyanga not only relaxes the muscles but also improves circulation, nourishes the skin, and promotes a deep sense of well-being.

What Is Abhyanga?

The word “Abhyanga” comes from Sanskrit, meaning “oil application.” During the therapy, warm herbal oil is gently massaged into the skin using rhythmic, synchronized strokes that follow the body’s energy channels (Srotas). This helps:

  • Loosen toxins (Ama)
  • Lubricate joints and tissues
  • Calm the nervous system
  • Promote lymphatic drainage

Abhyanga is often recommended as a daily self-care practice in Ayurveda, but when done professionally, it offers even deeper healing.

The Abhyanga Process

  1. Selection of Oil: Based on your Dosha (Vata, Pitta, Kapha), herbal oils like Dhanwantharam, Ksheerabala, or Triphaladi taila are chosen.

  2. Application: Warm oil is applied to the entire body, from the scalp to the soles.

  3. Massage Technique: Gentle, rhythmic strokes help oil penetrate deeply into the tissues.

  4. Duration: Typically 45 to 60 minutes.

  5. Post-Massage Steam (Optional): A herbal steam bath (Swedana) may follow to enhance detox.

How Often Should You Take Abhyanga?

For general wellness, once or twice a week is recommended. During detox (Panchakarma) or as per Ayurvedic consultation, it may be advised more frequently.
